What is a GPX Video Overlay Generator?▼
RunningOverlay.com is a free browser-based tool that takes your GPS running data (GPX files from
Garmin, Strava, Apple Watch, COROS, or Wahoo) and turns it into animated telemetry overlays. You
can export transparent video (Apple ProRes 4444 with alpha channel), animated GIFs, or PNG image
sequence frames to overlay directly onto your running footage in any video editing app.
How do I add the running overlay to my video in CapCut, Premiere Pro, or DaVinci
Resolve?▼
Export your overlay in Transparent Video format. When imported into video
editors like CapCut Desktop, Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve, the
background is 100% transparent out-of-the-box — no green screen or chroma keying required.
Simply place the overlay on a video track above your running clip and scale or position it
anywhere on screen.
Can I create running overlays on my phone (iPhone & Android)?▼
Yes! For mobile video editors like CapCut Mobile, InShot, or VN Video Editor, you have two great
options:
- Green Screen (Chroma) preset: Select the Green Screen colour preset in
Step 5, export the video, and use the "Chroma Key" / "Cutout" tool in your mobile editor
to remove the green background.
- Animated GIF: Export an animated GIF (automatically capped at 30
seconds for mobile compatibility) and insert it as an animated sticker or overlay.
Which GPS watches and fitness platforms are supported?▼
Any device or app capable of exporting GPX files is supported. This includes Garmin Connect,
Strava, Apple Watch (exported via HealthFit or RunGap), COROS, Wahoo ELEMNT, Polar Flow, Suunto,
and Stryd running pods. All sensor telemetry including GPS speed, distance, elevation gain,
heart rate, cadence (steps per minute), and running power (watts) is automatically recognised
and rendered.
How do Heart Rate Zones and Pace Splits work?▼
When you upload a GPX activity, RunningOverlay detects your peak heart rate and sets up standard
5-zone thresholds (Z1 Recovery to Z5 Maximum Effort). You can customise your maximum heart rate
or fine-tune individual zone boundaries. The overlay features an animated 5-segment progressive
zone meter that fills up as your heart rate increases. The Pace Splits widget plots vertical
pace bars for your last 5 completed or in-progress kilometres or miles.
Is my GPS and fitness data kept private?▼
Yes, 100% private. All GPX parsing, telemetry calculation, canvas rendering, and video encoding
are processed client-side inside your own web browser using WebAssembly. Your activity data and
GPS coordinates never leave your device and are never sent to any server.
How do I sync the overlay timer with my video clip?▼
Use the Trim Segment sliders to select the exact portion of your run featured
in your video. Checking "Reset timer to 00:00 at start" ensures your overlay timer starts at
0:00 right when your video clip begins. You can also fine-tune the timer with the Timer Offset
setting.
